Faun

The wild is not something we enter. It is something we remember.

Long before forests were mapped or named, they were inhabited. Not always by creatures that could be easily seen, but by presences felt in the stillness between wind and movement. The faun belongs to that older imagination. Part man, part goat, part landscape itself. A figure of instinct, mischief, and quiet guardianship. Neither fully wild nor fully human, but something in between. To name March’s ink Faun was to capture that threshold, where the natural world begins to look back.

At first, Faun settles onto the page as a deep, mossed green. Rich, saturated, and grounded, like the undergrowth of an old forest where light struggles to reach. As it dries, variation begins to emerge. Softer greens rise through the base, lifting into eucalyptus tones, while darker, almost blackened pools gather in shaded areas. The result is organic and layered, with a natural shading that feels less applied and more grown into the paper.

There is a quiet complexity beneath the surface. Subtle shifts in tone echo the textures of bark, leaf, and damp earth, giving the ink a sense of place rather than a single fixed colour. It sits comfortably alongside Eucalyptus Regnans in spirit, but moves deeper into the forest. Darker, denser, and more verdant.

The shimmer introduces something unexpected. Multichromatic, elusive, and magical, it moves between blue and aqua when viewed directly, cool and reflective like filtered light through canopy. As the angle changes, it transforms. Purple begins to surface, followed by soft flashes of pink, as though something hidden has briefly stepped into view. The effect is not immediate. It reveals itself slowly, depending on how the light finds it, giving the writing a subtle, shifting life.

The artwork, painted by Belinda entirely with Van Dieman’s inks, places the faun within its world rather than apart from it. Leaning against a tree at the edge of water, it feels both present and fleeting. The landscape is soft, luminous, and alive, but never fully still. Like the ink, it suggests that something more exists just beyond what can be clearly seen.

Faun is not an ink of spectacle. It does not announce itself loudly. It draws you in gradually, asking you to look a little longer, to notice what changes as your perspective shifts.

We were not made separate from the wild, only distant from it.
