Van Dieman's & Pen Chalet's World Oceans

The World Oceans Collection

A year-long collaboration between Van Dieman’s Ink and Pen Chalet, celebrating the vastness, diversity, and quiet power of the world’s oceans. Each release explores a single ocean or sea through colour, movement, and light, expressed in carefully formulated fountain pen inks.

Designed as a cohesive series, the collection pairs a unified nautical box with distinctive bottle labels that allow each ink to speak for itself. Flowing currents, shifting depths, and reflective shimmer echo the way oceans move and change, from tranquil shallows to immense, unknowable depths.

Every ink is handmade in Tasmania using distilled Tasmanian water, crafted to balance beauty with reliable everyday performance.

Pacific Ocean

The Pacific Ocean is the first release in this collection. Vast, ancient, and endlessly varied, it holds volcanic fire, coral gardens, deep trenches, and open blue horizons. These inks draw from the Pacific’s extremes, capturing both its calm surface and the powerful forces beneath.

Arctic Ocean

The Arctic Ocean is a study in contrast.

Silence and brilliance. Shadow and refracted light. Beneath drifting ice and polar night lies a world of shifting blues, frozen textures, and sudden flashes of sun at the edge of the horizon. Our Arctic release captures that stark beauty through cool glacial tones, soft misted shading, and luminous shimmer that glints like light across sea ice. Calm, restrained, and quietly dramatic, these inks reflect the stillness and power of the far north.

Atlantic Ocean

The Atlantic is a corridor of movement.

Stretching between continents and binding histories together, it is an ocean defined by exchange, migration, and relentless current. From the cold, slate waters of the North Atlantic to the deep cobalt expanse of the South, its character shifts with latitude, yet always carries a sense of power beneath the surface.

The Atlantic is shaped by contrast. Storm-forged swells roll in from the west, while luminous tropical shallows shimmer along equatorial coasts. The Gulf Stream threads warmth northward, carving climate and culture in its wake. Along its margins lie rugged cliffs, ancient trade routes, and waters that have carried explorers, empires, and ideas across centuries.

It is not the largest ocean, but it may be the most storied.

Restless. Historic. Commanding.
An ocean that connects the world.

Indian Ocean

The Indian Ocean is a place of warmth, motion, and quiet power. It breathes with monsoons, shifting seasonally in great arcs, carrying traders, cultures, and stories between continents for thousands of years. Its waters are rich with life, its surface often calm, yet beneath lies a constant, steady movement that shapes coastlines and civilizations alike.

This ocean holds contrast in balance. Sunlit shallows glow in turquoise and gold, while deeper waters settle into warmer blues, touched by the sediments and heat of surrounding lands. It is an ocean of colour and history, where light lingers longer and the horizon feels endless.

More than a body of water, the Indian Ocean is a connector. A meeting place of worlds, defined by rhythm, warmth, and continuity.
