Aurora Australis

Fountain Pen Ink

Aurora Australis is a spectacularly vibrant ink that replicates the dancing green and purple ominous glows that swirl in the sky when the southern hemisphere is lit up by the highly charged particles fired at us from the sun during a Coronal Mass Ejection. The combination of pink-purple, dark magenta-black, and bright green are a result of the high saturation of two dyes that combine to create these effects in the ink. The true colour of the ink is the light pinky tone, but this is accompanied by the darker tone in heavy writing, and the bright green sheen on good quality fountain pen friendly paper.

Ink Data

Surface Tension: 47.3mN/m

What is this?Surface Tension affects the flow of an ink through a pen, and how quickly it is absorbed into paper. Ink with a high surface tension generally flows and dries slowly, while a low surface tension causes faster flow and dry time, but can cause ink to gush, and also feather or bleed. Water has a surface tenstion of 72mN/m. Most inks are in the range of 40-60mN/m

pH: Data Coming Soon

What is this? The pH of an ink defines it's alkalinity or acidity. The pH is important for the dye in the ink to achieve the correct colour. Inks with a pH between 6.5 and 8.5 are generally neutral and safe to use in all pens.

Saturation: Very High

What is this? The saturation of an ink is the percentage of pure dye content in the mix. Generally but not always, higher saturation increases sheening and decreases shading, while also improving flow wetness but causing slower drying time. Very light inks can have as little as 2% dye content, while extremely saturated inks have upwards of 20%.

Sheen: Very High

What is this? The sheen of an ink is the secondary, often shiny colour that appears when the ink is swatched heavily or pools in script. The sheen colour depends on the specific dyes in the ink, while the intensity depends on the saturation of dye. Some inks will never sheen, while some will sheen on almost any paper in any amount.

Shading: Very Low

What is this?Shading is an ink's ability to create a range of different tones, from light to dark, depending on how heavily it wets the page. Generally but not always, inks with a lower saturation of dye are more effective at producing shading effects, but the kind of dye used also impacts this.

Shimmer: None

What is this?Shimmer is a pigment added to inks to create a sparkly effect. There are a wide variety of shimmer forms and colours, each with its own qualities. Most inks contain no shimmer, and those that do can contain shimmer in differing quantities. Highly shimmered inks do carry the potential of clogging pens, especially ones with finer nibs. Van Dieman's only uses extremely high quality shimmer pigments that lower (but do not completely remove) the risk of this.

Flow Wetness: Wet

What is this? This, quite simply put, is how well an ink flows through a pen, but also dictates how quickly an ink will seep into a page. Flow is affected by both the surface tension and saturation of an ink, but also by other additives such as humectants and surfactants. Inks with a high flow wetness can sometimes, but not always, feather and bleed more than other.

Recommendations

Aurora Australis performs very well in all nib sizes, but has a great amount of variation in hue and tone depending on the pen and paper combination. Finer, drier pens will produce the lighter, pinky tone more effectively, especially on paper types that allow ink to dry faster, while wetter writing pens and those with broader nibs will bring out more of the darker tones, as well as more of the bright green sheen, especially when combined with higher quality, less absorbent paper such as Tomoe River or Midori. We found a combination of a Medium nib pen on Bloc Rhodia or a fine nib pen on Tomoe River produced writing that brought out both tones, and some noticeable sheening.

Blackened Seas

Fountain Pen Ink

A reformulation of our original "Blackened Seas" from the now discontinued Midnight Series. This ink has all the same tone and hue of the original, but is now higher in saturation and contains a heavy red sheen on top of the very dark blue-black teal.

Bonfire Night

Shimmering Fountain Pen Ink

Bonfire Night was originally a hugely popular ink in Van Dieman's now discontinued Midnight Series. It has now been reformulated with a whole new feel. Both the original and the reformulation are fiery red-orange inks with a gold shimmer, but this one differs in having a higher saturation of dye, a higher quality gold shimmer that produces a more attractive effect, and a golden sheen that works alongside the shimmer to produce a truly fiery ink.

Cherry Blossom Dream

Fountain Pen Ink

Cherry Blossom Dream is a soft shading pastel pink that inspired by a cool spring nighttime breeze, gently shaking loose the blossoms from a cherry tree, from within the deep sleep of a dream. Cherry Blossom Dream is one of Van Dieman's extremely low saturation inks, producing some amazing shading. This extraordinarily light pink shades from almost nothing to a blushing, but still light tone. Cherry Blossom Dream also has a fairly low surface tension, which allows it to flow moderately wetly, despite its low saturation.

Dawn

Fountain Pen Ink

Dawn is inspired and highly representational of the last lingering moments of night, just before the sun bursts triumphantly over the horizon, when refracted and reflected light bounce and dance blindingly on the clouds and sky. Dawn is a supersaturated ink with a bright, hot pink undertone, almost overpowered by a golden sheen that mottles and blends with the pink underneath to create an array of orange hues, much like the sky at dawn.

Fountain Pen Ink

A light shading ink representing the shadow of the sun going down. This is Van Dieman's least saturated ink, and our lightest every grey to date. Dusk has subtle hints of purply blue, like the sky after sunset, and with some amazing shading. Dusk still flowing fairly wetly due to a low surface tension and slightly higher viscosity, despite the low dye content.

Recreated and Back by popular demand

Shimmering Fountain Pen Ink

Enchanted Woods is back by popular demand. Originally in our popular Midnight Series, from 2018, Enchanted woods is a single release of 2022 from Van Dieman's Ink in the Night Collection.

Enchanted woods is a dark and verdant green, with an earthy red sheen, illuminated by a silvery shimmer, suggestive of moonlight scattering on autumnal frost on the Tasmanian rainforest floor.

Golden Orb Web

Shimmering Fountain Pen Ink

Golden Orb Web is a light sun yellow ink with gold solar shimmer. This ink resembles the incredible web of the Golden Orb Spider. Golden orb webs are massive to behold, with a shimmering yellow colour. The silken fibers of these webs are so soft, yet so strong, that they are the only spider thread ever used to make textiles for humans. A single garment was made, stronger than Kevlar, yet softer than silk, from over a million collections of thread from Golden Orb weaving spiders. And not a single spider was hurt in its making. This ink shades incredibly well from the faintest yellow to almost orange, and has a high quality golden shimmer not previously used in ink, that creates a perfectly even distribution of shimmer throughout, while also holding well to the page.

Midnight

Fountain Pen Ink

Midnight is Van Dieman's "Blackest Blue". This highly saturated ink is blacker than both Hanging Lake and Pepperberry, but bluer than both Devil Black and Abyss. With minimal shading and a faint hint of a black-red sheen in just the right conditions, Midnight is a smooth-flowing ink, dark as darkest night and perfect for the everyday writer.

Moon Flower

Fountain Pen Ink

This color is based on the delicate Moon Flower that only blooms at night. Bats and other nocturnal creatures eat its nectar. A "beautiful blue" is the best way to describe Moon Flower, a combination ink of too high quality dyes, mixed to a perfectly balanced saturation; not too light so as to appear washed out; not so heavy as to be overshadowed by sheen; just enough to be rich and to stand out by its own right. The hue of Moon Flower sits on the warmer side of blue, with light violet variations in heavier writing and ample shading in all pen and ink combinations.

Recommendations

Moonlit Lake performs very well in all nib sizes, but shows off the base blue-green colour most effectively in finer nibs, while in broader nibs it will appear much darker, almost black, with a heavier red sheen and more noticeable shimmer. Moonlit Lake also performs well on most papers, with limited feathering or bleeding, but shows off the best combination of sheen, shimmer and colour on Bloc Rhodia in a fine nib pen.

Make certain to shake the bottle well to maximize the shimmer content in your pen fill, or leave it unshaken if you want to avoid the shimmer and focus on the colour and sheen.

Tiger Quoll Prowl

Shimmering Fountain Pen Ink

Tiger Quoll Prowl is a highly saturated brown that pays homage to the gorgeous nocturnal and very shy marsupial and the closest relative to the Tassie Devil. Like its cousin it likes to hunt smaller animals at night. This color resemble the Tiger Quoll on a prowl at night. It has a hint of shimmer that mimics the spots on the Tiger Quoll, and green sheen to resemble the forest he hunts in.

Ink Data

Surface Tension: 46.0mN/m

What is this?Surface Tension affects the flow of an ink through a pen, and how quickly it is absorbed into paper. Ink with a high surface tension generally flows and dries slowly, while a low surface tension causes faster flow and dry time, but can cause ink to gush, and also feather or bleed. Water has a surface tenstion of 72mN/m. Most inks are in the range of 40-60mN/m

pH: 7.0

What is this? The pH of an ink defines it's alkalinity or acidity. The pH is important for the dye in the ink to achieve the correct colour. Inks with a pH between 6.5 and 8.5 are generally neutral and safe to use in all pens.

Saturation: High

What is this? The saturation of an ink is the percentage of pure dye content in the mix. Generally but not always, higher saturation increases sheening and decreases shading, while also improving flow wetness but causing slower drying time. Very light inks can have as little as 2% dye content, while extremely saturated inks have upwards of 20%.

Sheen: Moderate

What is this? The sheen of an ink is the secondary, often shiny colour that appears when the ink is swatched heavily or pools in script. The sheen colour depends on the specific dyes in the ink, while the intensity depends on the saturation of dye. Some inks will never sheen, while some will sheen on almost any paper in any amount.

Shading: Low

What is this?Shading is an ink's ability to create a range of different tones, from light to dark, depending on how heavily it wets the page. Generally but not always, inks with a lower saturation of dye are more effective at producing shading effects, but the kind of dye used also impacts this.

Shimmer: Moderate to High

What is this?Shimmer is a pigment added to inks to create a sparkly effect. There are a wide variety of shimmer forms and colours, each with its own qualities. Most inks contain no shimmer, and those that do can contain shimmer in differing quantities. Highly shimmered inks do carry the potential of clogging pens, especially ones with finer nibs. Van Dieman's only uses extremely high quality shimmer pigments that lower (but do not completely remove) the risk of this.

Flow Wetness: Moderate

What is this? This, quite simply put, is how well an ink flows through a pen, but also dictates how quickly an ink will seep into a page. Flow is affected by both the surface tension and saturation of an ink, but also by other additives such as humectants and surfactants. Inks with a high flow wetness can sometimes, but not always, feather and bleed more than other.

We have discontinued the old "Midnight" Series, which focused more on the "spooky" and the "scary" of nighttime, and refocused on the night itself as a source of inspiration. We have reformulated and massively improved three of the most popular inks from the original Midnight series, but also created 13 new inks, all of which are exciting innovations.

In this new collection we have stepped well outside our comfort zone, creating by hand every single ink from 99% Australian sourced ingredients, and sourcing some new and very expensive ingredients not used before. We have utilized higher quality shimmers that flow better, distribute more evenly, adhere more effectively and, in one particular ink, are iridescent. We have also used some new dyes that produce some incredible sheening effects and some interesting chromatography. We have pushed some of inks to the limit of saturation, with some monster sheening inks to take on any of the competition on the market, and on the polar opposite of the spectrum, we have made some super-light shaders that still manage to flow incredibly well in just about any pen.We have also invested a huge amount of time and money into scientifically analyzing each and every ink for specific characteristics.
